Three Study Programs

Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, Founder of the New Kadampa Tradition, has designed three unique Study Programs:

General Program (GP)

Foundation Program (FP)

Teacher Training Program (TTP)

These in-depth study programs consist of the systematic study and practice of New Kadampa Buddhism and are especially suited to people of this modern world.

“If we just dabble superficially in a spiritual path we will never gain a deep and stable experience, and our wisdom will never develop to its full potential. This is why these spiritual programs are so important” – Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

General Program

The General Program provides a basic introduction to Buddhist view, meditation and practice that is suitable for beginners.  It also includes advanced teachings and practices from both Sutra and Tantra.

These are normally walk-in classes – nowadays online. See our calendar for full schedule.

Foundation Program

Date: Mondays 6:30-9:00pm

Teacher: Gen-la Kelsang Khyenrab

Book Studied: How to Understand the Mind

The Foundation Program (FP) is designed for those who wish to deepen their understanding and experience of Kadampa Buddhism through a systematic study of six texts by Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche.

When you join, you will experience the great benefits of being part of this systematic study program. Through this you can improve your good heart, your wisdom, and your cherishing of others by going deeper into your study and meditation practice. Read more about the texts studied and benefits HERE.

*This is not a walk-in program and enrolment is required. All FP students sign up freshly at the start of each new book or section of a book. You are also required to have attended General Program classes regularly for a minimum of 6-months before joining the Foundation Program. It is strongly advised that you start your studies at the beginning of a new book or section of a book. Date: Sundays 7-9pm, Mondays 7-9am, Thursdays 7-9am

Teacher: Gen-la Kelsang Khyenrab

Book Studied: The New Heart of Wisdom

The Teacher Training Program (TTP) is designed for people who wish to train as authentic Dharma Teachers in the New Kadampa Tradition. In addition to completing the study of fourteen texts of Sutra and Tantra, including the six texts studied on the Foundation Program, students are required to observe certain commitments with regard to behaviour and way of life, and to complete a number of meditation retreats each year.

Read more about the texts studied and benefits here.

*The Teacher Training Program is not a walk-in program and enrollment is required. When TTP students sign up they have a strong intention and commit to complete the study of all 12 subjects without stopping. Students must have received Highest Yoga Tantra empowerments within the New Kadampa Tradition in order to study most of the books in TTP.

Commitments of Joining the Study Programs

When you join either the Foundation Program or Teacher Training Program you must make the following commitments:

To attend every teaching class, discussion class and review classes

To memorize the Condensed Meaning or Root Text of the books and to sit a written examination at the end of each book or section of a book

To attend at least one prayer service each week organized by the Centre

To prepare well for each class so discussion partners’ efforts are respected

To attend the group discussions

In addition, you will be expected to practically help the Centre in various ways – such as by occasionally putting up daily water offerings, cleaning the meditation room and other areas as needed; also helping in assisting at short courses where possible and assisting or teaching at General Program classes from time to time.  This is aspect is as important as the study part of the program as it allows you to put the teachings into practice supported by other practitioners.

Prioritizing the Study Program in your personal schedule

Making your Teacher Training Program a high priority is essential for your studies and meditations to be successful. The Program term dates will available in advance every six months; therefore, for any personal meetings/holidays etc. you should have time to re-schedule if necessary in the light of your Study Program attendance commitment.  Please note:  valid reasons for non-attendance should not include avoidable appointments or holidays.
