A Meditation Journey

Tuesday Drop-in classes with Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Chodor

Is the world as real as we think it is? Buddha taught that the world is “empty” of existence from its own side, yet we rarely question the way things appear to us. We assume that the world exists independently, separate from our mind—but this could not be further from the truth.

By deepening our understanding of this truth, we can free ourselves from limiting perceptions, dissolve negative emotions, and uncover a vast, unshakable inner peace.

Through guided meditations and practical teachings, you will learn how to integrate the wisdom of emptiness into daily life—transforming challenges, relationships, and even your sense of self. Experience the freedom and joy that come from seeing the world as it truly is!

In this 6-week meditation series, we will explore meditations on ultimate truth, emptiness. Each session will guide us deeper into this profound wisdom:

Half-day Retreat ~ Declutter the Mind

Declutter the Mind

Half-day Retreat with Jay Roberts

Create inner space, free from distractions

Sometimes, we feel overwhelmed by all the responsibilities, decisions, and choices we face in our day-to-day lives. Difficult people and challenging situations can take up a lot of mental space, making it hard to think clearly, act wisely, and live in the moment.

By training in meditation, we can create inner space and clarity that enable us to control our minds, regardless of external circumstances. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? In this course, we will explore how to use meditation to access the natural spaciousness and peace of our own minds.

"When the turbulence of distracting thoughts subsides and our mind becomes still, a deep happiness and contentment naturally arise from within. This feeling of contentment and well-being helps us to cope with the busyness and difficulties of daily life." — Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, The Meditation Handbook

Buddha’s Enlightenment Day

Buddha’s Enlightenment Day

April 15th marks the anniversary of Buddha Shakyamuni demonstrating the attainment of enlightenment in 589 B.C.E.  This is an extremely important day in the Buddhist calendar because our actions are 100,000 times more powerful than on other days.

This event is marked by special purification and fasting retreats in Kadampa Buddhist Centres worldwide based on the practice Drop of Essential Nectar. This practice, which is done in conjunction with Eleven-faced Avalokiteshvara. It is very powerful for purifying negative karma of body, speech, and mind, and for pacifying strong delusions such as desirous attachment and hatred. It is also a special method for receiving blessings and improving our experience of love, compassion, and bodhichitta.

Nyungne Retreat ~ Special Purification & Fasting Practice

Special Purification & Fasting Practice

Nyungne Retreat with Gen Kelsang Chodor

This two-day retreat, done in conjunction with Thousand-Armed Avalokiteshvara practice, is very powerful for purifying negative karma of body, speech, and mind, and for pacifying strong delusions such as desirous attachment and hatred. This practice involves taking the Eight Mahayana precepts, a promise to avoid all non-virtue for 24 hours, combined with the practice of prostrations. Through this we improve our compassion and develop a pure and light heart.

This practice is done over two days. On the first day, it is customary to abstain from all meals apart from lunch at 12:30 p.m. On the second day, we engage in a complete fast, abstaining from all food and drink for 24 hours. This traditional retreat is offered each year around the 15th of April, Buddha's Enlightenment Day. Although this is an in-depth Buddhist practice, it is open to everyone. *If this is your first time attending a Nyungne Retreat, please email: epc@kadampa.ca to receive essential informations before the start of the retreat.*

*Accommodations are available for those engaging in this retreat. The dorm/rooms are in limited quantity. For further information and to submit a request, please click here.*

We want to be happy all the time, even during sleep. How can we do this? We can do this through training in meditation, which makes our mind peaceful. When our mind is peaceful, we are happy all the time, regardless of our external circumstances.

These classes are perfect for those who wish to build the foundations of a successful meditation practice. No previous experience is required.

Each class is self-contained so feel free to drop-in when you can!  Each class will be followed by complimentary refreshments and the opportunity to ask questions. Everybody welcome!

*The meditation is based on Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche’s Meditations for a Clear Mind. The audio download is available at Tharpa Publications.

Understanding Dreams
& the Nature of our Reality

Day Course

All wisdom paves the way to happiness, but the highest wisdom—the wisdom that realizes ultimate truth, emptiness—holds the key to lasting peace. In this meditation course, Gen Chodor, resident teacher of KMC Canada, will practically explain how this profound understanding of emptiness removes suffering at its root, offering us freedom from all pain.

“Through realizing emptiness every kind of problem will automatically cease. This I promise. I am telling you this from my own experience; I am not just intellectual. This is the real meaning of your having met Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.”

Karma & the Key to Happiness

Creating a future of happiness

Half-day course with Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Chodor

When we find ourselves immersed in problems, we often ask: Why me? But do we have an answer to that question? Do we feel unlucky? Do we feel that we’ve been dealt an unfair hand?

Buddha’s teachings on the law of karma give us a clear and practical explanation of why things happen the way they do and how we can begin to change our experiences—from not so great to fantastic. Or at the very least, better. Rather than simply seeking happiness, we learn to create it. Rather than running from unhappiness, we learn to abandon its causes. Understanding karma puts us in the driver’s seat of our own life.

In this course, we will learn how, by applying the law of karma, we can change our experience of the present, heal the past, and create a more fortunate future.

Turning the Wheel of Dharma Day

Turning the Wheel of Dharma Day

June 4 marks the anniversary of Buddha’s first teaching in this world and also the birthday of Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, the Founder of the New Kadampa Tradition – International Kadampa Buddhist Union.

Forty-nine days after Buddha attained enlightenment, as a result of requests he rose from meditation and taught the first Wheel of Dharma. These teachings, which include the Sutra of the Four Noble Truths and other discourses, are the principal source of the Hinayana, or Lesser Vehicle, of Buddhism.

Later, Buddha taught the second and third Wheels of Dharma, which include the Perfection of Wisdom Sutras and the Sutra Discriminating the Intention, respectively. These teachings are the source of the Mahayana, or Great Vehicle, of Buddhism.

It is because of the great kindness of Buddha in turning the Wheel of Dharma that the people of this world have the opportunity to follow a spiritual path to the permanent inner peace of enlightenment. Without these teachings there would be no path for us to follow and so no possibility of bringing our suffering to an end.

To commemorate this special day, Kadampa Buddhist Centres around the world hold special events with prayers for Buddha’s teachings to flourish in this world for a very long time.

The Buddhist Way of Life
& (optional) Refuge Vow Ceremony

Finding Lasting Freedom from Problems

Special Day Course with Gen Kelsang Chodor

We all encounter difficulties in life, but do they have the power to make us unhappy? According to Buddha’s wisdom, our problems do not exist outside of us—they arise from within our own mind. When we respond to challenges with negative states of mind, such as anger, anxiety, or attachment, we create suffering for ourselves and others.

In this course, Gen Kelsang Chodor, Resident Teacher of KMC Canada, will explain how we can free ourselves from painful feelings by transforming our mind. Through understanding and practicing the Buddhist way of life—the path of refuge, seeking protection in Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—we can heal our mind, cultivate deep inner peace, and follow a path to lasting happiness.

Join us to discover how the Buddhist way of life offers a clear, practical method to overcome problems at their root and find true freedom.

Note: In the afternoon, there will be a special opportunity to receive the Buddhist Refuge Vows for those who wish to take them. These will be explained during the day.

Understanding love, desire & attachment
Half-day course with Kelsang Rigma

We often confuse love with desirous attachment. As a result, we often experience pain and disappointment within our so-called ‘loving’ relationships. But authentic love can never cause pain. It only ever produces happiness. Why? Because true love actually arises from a profound understanding of our interdependence and interconnection with everyone. This understanding liberates us from our painful self-centered grasping attachments. And it opens us to an expansive empathy and love that brings joy, harmony and purpose into our lives.
