Half-day Retreat ~ Declutter the Mind

Declutter the Mind

Half-day Retreat with Jay Roberts

Create inner space, free from distractions

Sometimes, we feel overwhelmed by all the responsibilities, decisions, and choices we face in our day-to-day lives. Difficult people and challenging situations can take up a lot of mental space, making it hard to think clearly, act wisely, and live in the moment.

By training in meditation, we can create inner space and clarity that enable us to control our minds, regardless of external circumstances. Wouldn’t that be wonderful? In this course, we will explore how to use meditation to access the natural spaciousness and peace of our own minds.

"When the turbulence of distracting thoughts subsides and our mind becomes still, a deep happiness and contentment naturally arise from within. This feeling of contentment and well-being helps us to cope with the busyness and difficulties of daily life." — Geshe Kelsang Gyatso, The Meditation Handbook

Retreat ~ Long Life, Merit & Wisdom

Long Life, Merit & Wisdom

Annual Amitayus Retreat with Gen Kelsang Chodor

The greatest obstacles to the fulfilment of our wish to experience pure happiness are death and ignorance. Death destroys our opportunity to take the essence of our precious human life, and ignorance destroys our opportunity to develop a pure experience of Buddha’s teachings, the Dharma. To overcome these obstacles, we need to increase our lifespan and our wisdom. The principal method for doing this is the yoga of Buddha Amitayus, which is also a special method for increasing the positive power of our mind, or merit.

With a long life, we can complete our spiritual path in this very life. We can also engage in this special practice on behalf others when they are sick or in danger of dying. This traditional retreat is offered each year, usually in January or February. Although this is an in-depth Buddhist practice, it is suitable to everyone. No prior experience of Buddhism or meditation is required. Everyone is welcome!

Dealing with Distractions

Wednesday Morning Class with Gen Kelsang Chodor

Buddha placed great value on concentration. Many of his teachings explain how move into deeper and deeper states of concentration, which he called “absorptions”.  But you don’t have to be an experienced meditator to appreciate the value of such a deep state of concentration. We have all experienced absorbing into a project and getting into ‘the flow’. Unfortunately, this experience doesn’t happen often for most of us as we are easily distracted.

Through training in concentration using a simple object such as the breath and developing the skill of watching our mind, we can develop alertness to help us maintain our concentration. Once we experience the inner peace of concentration in meditation, we can prevent our mind from wandering to meaningless distractions in our daily lives.  This 3-week series will explore ways to improve our concentration, keep ourselves focused and abandon distractions.

August 16: The basics of meditation – training in mindfulness

August 23: Why we get distracted and how to catch it at its early stages

August 30: Tips on how to stay focused

Each class is self-contained so feel free to drop-in when you can!  Each class will be followed by complimentary refreshments and the opportunity to ask questions.  Everybody welcome!

Half-Day Meditation Retreat

“When the turbulence of distracting thoughts subsides and our mind becomes still, a deep happiness and contentment naturally arises from within.”  - Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

The real source of happiness is inner peace. If our mind is peaceful, we will be happy all the time, regardless of external conditions, but if it is disturbed or troubled in any way, we will never be happy, no matter how good our external conditions may be.  In this half-day meditation retreat we will learn how to meditate on the mind itself with a sequence of beautiful and profound meditations taught by Buddha. With regular practice, these meditations help us to experience mental clarity and a deep and profound inner peace.

Through training in concentration observing our own mind we can overcome distractions and come to experience for ourself the inner peace arising from the clarity of the mind. This way of meditating also overcomes quickly our worries, anxiety, negative thoughts and other mental busyness. It connects us directly to our limitless essential nature - our root mind, which is like an ocean of inner peace and bliss at our heart.

Stay Focused: Dealing with Distractions

Stay Focused: Dealing with Distractions

Tuesday evening weekly class with Kadampa Buddhist Monk & Teacher Gen Kelsang Thekchen
