Special Day Course ~ The Buddhist Way of Life & Refuge Vow Ceremony

The Buddhist Way of Life
& (optional) Refuge Vow Ceremony

Finding Lasting Freedom from Problems

Special Day Course with Gen Kelsang Chodor

We all encounter difficulties in life, but do they have the power to make us unhappy? According to Buddha’s wisdom, our problems do not exist outside of us—they arise from within our own mind. When we respond to challenges with negative states of mind, such as anger, anxiety, or attachment, we create suffering for ourselves and others.

In this course, Gen Kelsang Chodor, Resident Teacher of KMC Canada, will explain how we can free ourselves from painful feelings by transforming our mind. Through understanding and practicing the Buddhist way of life—the path of refuge, seeking protection in Buddha, Dharma, and Sangha—we can heal our mind, cultivate deep inner peace, and follow a path to lasting happiness.

Join us to discover how the Buddhist way of life offers a clear, practical method to overcome problems at their root and find true freedom.

Note: In the afternoon, there will be a special opportunity to receive the Buddhist Refuge Vows for those who wish to take them. These will be explained during the day.

Understanding Dreams
& the Nature of our Reality

Day Course

All wisdom paves the way to happiness, but the highest wisdom—the wisdom that realizes ultimate truth, emptiness—holds the key to lasting peace. In this meditation course, Gen Chodor, resident teacher of KMC Canada, will practically explain how this profound understanding of emptiness removes suffering at its root, offering us freedom from all pain.

“Through realizing emptiness every kind of problem will automatically cease. This I promise. I am telling you this from my own experience; I am not just intellectual. This is the real meaning of your having met Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.”

Karma & the Key to Happiness

Creating a future of happiness

Half-day course with Resident Teacher Gen Kelsang Chodor

When we find ourselves immersed in problems, we often ask: Why me? But do we have an answer to that question? Do we feel unlucky? Do we feel that we’ve been dealt an unfair hand?

Buddha’s teachings on the law of karma give us a clear and practical explanation of why things happen the way they do and how we can begin to change our experiences—from not so great to fantastic. Or at the very least, better. Rather than simply seeking happiness, we learn to create it. Rather than running from unhappiness, we learn to abandon its causes. Understanding karma puts us in the driver’s seat of our own life.

In this course, we will learn how, by applying the law of karma, we can change our experience of the present, heal the past, and create a more fortunate future.

Love without pain

Understanding love, desire & attachment
Half-day course with Kelsang Rigma

We often confuse love with desirous attachment. As a result, we often experience pain and disappointment within our so-called ‘loving’ relationships. But authentic love can never cause pain. It only ever produces happiness. Why? Because true love actually arises from a profound understanding of our interdependence and interconnection with everyone. This understanding liberates us from our painful self-centered grasping attachments. And it opens us to an expansive empathy and love that brings joy, harmony and purpose into our lives.

Day course ~ How To Help The Dying and Those Who Have Died (Powa Practice)

How To Help The Dying and
Those Who Have Died

Day course with Gen Kelsang Chodor

When someone dies, although their body stays in this world and is buried or cremated, their mind goes to another life, rather like a bird leaving one nest to fly to another. With this basic understanding of rebirth, we can practise 'powa' to ensure that our loved ones find lasting peace. 'Powa' means transference of consciousness.

Through our loving prayers, we send or transfer the consciousness of someone who has recently died to a Pure Land of Buddha where they no longer experience any suffering. Our ability to help others to be reborn in a Pure Land depends upon the strength of our compassion and our reliance upon the Buddha of Compassion, Avalokiteshvara.

Discover this beautiful practice and the power of compassion and reliance upon holy beings such as Buddha Avalokiteshvara. No previous experience is necessary. Everyone is welcome.

Exploring the Wisdom Teachings
from the Three Principal Aspects of the Path

Special Weekend Course with Kadam Morten Clausen
(Partial booking available)

with a special Valentine Event Friday 7pm-8:30pm

Je Tsongkhapa’s legendary text, The Three Principal Aspects of the Path, is a concise presentation of the entire path to enlightenment. Especially the third aspect—Buddha’s teachings on the wisdom understanding ultimate truth—is presented with extraordinary clarity and startling profundity.

During this weekend, through talks, guided meditations, and discussions, Kadam Morten will guide us in exploring in particular the verses on wisdom. From the point of view of fulfilling our deepest wishes, this wisdom explains everything we need to know—from the everyday to the ultimate!

Topics include:

  • How can we let go of our unhappy minds?

  • How can we open our hearts to others and best help them?

  • How can we experience great joy and meaning in our lives?

  • What is emptiness, ultimate truth?

  • How do things actually exist?

  • How is freedom from suffering attainable?

  • What is enlightenment?

Taking this wonderful and liberating wisdom to heart will enhance our practice of the spiritual path, both Sutra and Tantra, and open us to a joyful and creative approach to life. In particular, it will empower us to transform all life experiences, including our problems, into our training of the mind so that they propel us along our path to lasting happiness and enlightenment.

Everyone is welcome.

NB: The explanation will be based on Geshe Kelsang’s translation and commentary from his book, The Mirror of Dharma with Additions. (This book is available at the Centre’s shop. E-book & mp3 formats are available to purchase and download from Tharpa Publications Canada site.)

Half-day course ~ Letting Go of Stress & Anxiety

Half-day course ~ Letting Go of Stress & Anxiety

Letting Go of Stress & Anxiety

Half-day course with Ian Tuttell

Many people suffer from feelings of anxiety or are simply overwhelmed by the stress and demands of everyday life.

We tend to think that situations or people in our life are the causes of our stress or unhappiness, so we then spend a lot of time mentally trying to figure out how to fix those situations or people, which often just makes our mind busier.

Buddha taught that all our unhappiness, stress, and anxiety come from our mind. More specifically, they come from our unrealistic expectations and our exaggerated views of ourselves, the people around us, and the world in general.

By learning to identify the actual causes of stress and unhappy thoughts, we can begin to understand how to become free from them. In this course, we will explore special ways of thinking and meditations that heal the mind from the source of these problems.

Our courses are held in the serene, spacious, and comfortable meditation room at Kadampa Meditation Centre Canada.  In between sessions, enjoy complimentary refreshments and the opportunity to ask questions. Our Temple shop also offers a variety of books and other meditation materials to support your journey toward greater understanding and tranquility.

Half-day course ~ Meditation In Motion: The 35 Confession Buddha Practice

Meditation In Motion:

The 35 Confession Buddha Practice

Half-day course with Gen Kelsang Chodor

Learn how to combine the benefits of meditation with physical exercise!

In this inspiring course, we will use the meditation practice of 'The 35 Confession Buddhas' to free our minds from negative potential (negative karma) and painful emotions, while also increasing our positive energy and general happiness.

This meditation practice can be combined with physical prostrations. The Tibetan word for prostrations is 'chag tsel' – ‘chag’ means sweeping away delusions, negative karma, and obstructions, and ‘tsel’ means requesting all good qualities. Prostration practice is therefore a two-pronged approach to increasing our positive qualities while simultaneously releasing our minds from heaviness, delusions, and obstacles.

It is not necessary for participants to perform physical prostrations in order to practice the 35 Confession Buddhas, although we will provide a demonstration on how to perform physical prostrations for those who wish to learn.

No previous experience of meditation is required. Everybody welcome!

The Art of Positive Thinking

Half-day course with Judi Watson

The ability to think positively doesn't come naturally for many of us. We easily get caught up in our negative habits of mind, which take us in the wrong internal direction from where we want to be. The good news is that positive thinking is something we can train in. Buddha was a master at training the mind, and through following the practical advice he gave, we can also train in the art of positive thinking, eventually developing a mind that is positive not just some of the time, but all of the time. Everyone has this potential.

The Wisdom of Meditation~Buddha Manjushri Empowerment

Wisdom of Meditation

Blessing Empowerment of Buddha Manjushri

with Gen Kelsang Chodor

If we don't know how to meditate correctly and effectively, our meditation practice will lack power. Without the power of meditation, the purpose of our precious human life will be lost, and we will lack the ability to guide ourselves and others on the paths to pure and lasting happiness.

Building upon this foundation, we will learn the invaluable instructions provided by the accomplished meditation master, Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche, on "Training in Meditation" from the book Mirror of Dharma with Additions. This guidance is essential, offering instructions on how to meditate correctly and powerfully.

Gen Chodor will also share advice that Gen-la Dekyong (the General Director of the NKT) received directly from Geshe Kelsang Gyatso on how to improve our meditation practice.

Through putting these instructions into practice, we will become qualified Kadampa practitioners with the ability to guide ourselves and others effectively on the path to pure and lasting happiness. How wonderful!

Igniting the Fire of Wisdom

The Blissful Path to Enlightenment

Summer Retreat with Kadampa Buddhist Nun & Guest Teacher Gen Kelsang Demo

(Partial booking is available.)

This retreat will be based on the teachings received at the NKT-IKBU Summer Festival 2024 on the Heart Sutra and the practice of and 'The Uncommon Yoga of Inconceivability'.

Open to everyone, this is a rare and precious opportunity to gain guidance and deep experience of the practice of the Uncommon Yoga of Inconceivability.

This practice is a special method, unique to the practice of Vajrayogini, whereby we can attain the Pure Land of Keajra or Dakini Land, the Pure Land of Buddha Heruka and Buddha Vajrayogini, within this life without abandoning our present body.

This training is called ‘uncommon yoga’ because it is an uncommon practice of Vajrayogini Tantra. This training is called ‘inconceivability’ because it has inconceivable meaning, and gives us inconceivable meaning in this life and in life after life.

This is a precious opportunity to immerse ourselves in these sublime and meaningful meditations. Through taking these insights deep into our heart, we can integrate them into our daily life, thereby transforming every moment of our life into the blissful path to enlightenment.

"We should know that it is impossible for our body to reach the moon through its own power but our mind can reach the moon instantaneously simply by thinking about it. This shows that through gaining deep familiarity with thinking ‘I am my mind Vajrayogini’ we will easily reach the Pure Land of Keajra simply by engaging in the practice of the uncommon yoga of inconceivability.”

- Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

How to Build Spiritual Experience

A Life of Great Meaning and Joy

Spring Retreat with Kadampa Buddhist Monk & Guest Teacher Gen Kelsang Khedrub

(Partial booking is available.)

“ When we understand clearly that inner peace is the real source of happiness, and how, through spiritual practice, we can experience progressively deeper levels of inner peace, we will develop tremendous enthusiasm to practice. ”              - Venerable Geshe Kelsang Gyatso Rinpoche

Over 2,500 years ago, Buddha gave sublime teachings on how to become more peaceful, confident and compassionate, and how the real source of happiness is inner peace. Since inner peace and all those good qualities can be cultivated through spiritual practice, we can see that by taking Buddha's teachings to heart and contemplating their meaning, we can build stable and authentic spiritual experiences in our heart.

This retreat will explore the very essence of Buddha's teaching and offer a variety of ways that we transform our spiritual knowledge into spiritual experience. No previous experience of meditation is required. Everybody welcome!

Half-day Course ~ Finding Real Refuge

Finding Real Refuge

Coming under the Umbrella of Buddhism

Half-day Course with Gen Kelsang Chodor

We usually try to find stability and protection from unpleasant feelings by surrounding ourselves with people and things that make us feel safe, happy and comfortable. Unfortunately, people and things eventually let us down. They are impermanent and do not have the power to provide what we really want in our heart of hearts: permanent freedom and protection from all suffering and problems.

In this half-day course, we will look at how only the Three Jewels - Buddha, Dharma and Sangha - are truly reliable objects of refuge, possessing the power to protect us permanently from all the sufferings of this life and our countless future lives. Through the practice of going for refuge, we will be able to enter into Buddhism, gradually developing a stable sense of peace, joy and freedom within our hearts. This unchangeable mind will then give us the strength to make authentic spiritual progress.

Suggested follow-up to the course: Saturday, April 20 - Sunday, April 21, 2024: Refuge Retreat (Bookings for this retreat are made separately.)
